We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Donald Currie (Ret'd) of Maple Ridge BC on 4 April 2025 at the age of 79 years.
Don was originally from North Vancouver and was a member of the 6th Field Squadron Cadet Corps when he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 10th Intake of the Sapper Apprentice Program in 1961. As an apprentice, he won the best athlete award and trained as a field engineer and carpenter.
On graduating in 1963, he was posted to Camp Gagetown. He took a voluntary release in 1964 to pursue a career as a carpenter. After a four-year apprenticeship, he joined Hashman Construction and soon became a foreman and then superintendent. When the company moved to California, Don stayed in BC and started his own construction company. With all his experience under his belt, he turned to teaching and started a carpentry program at Kwantlen College. It was the first self-paced apprenticeship training program in the province. He loved teaching and he developed many lifelong friendships with his students. He retired from Kwantlen in 2005. He and his wife, Bev, travelled and met many friends along the way. They had three children; Michelle, Shauna and Russell. Don was an active member of the Chilliwack Retired Sappers.
A Celebration of Life for Don was held on Thursday, 18 April at 1 PM at Maple Ridge Alliance Church.
