We regret to advise of the death of Major John Munro Ross,, CD (Ret’d) at the Mountain Lakes Seniors Community in Nelson BC on 31 March 2025 at age 85.
Born in Vancouver, BC, John attended St George’s School, where he was head boy for both Grade 12 and 13 (1957 and 1958). Immediately after high school, John attended Royal Military College in Kingston, graduating in 1962). Upon completing his Military Engineering Officer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, John was posted to Fort Churchill MB for three years.His next posting was to Canadian Forces Base Suffield AB. During that tour, John was awarded an Athlone Fellowship in 1965 and moved to Birmingham, England, where he completed his PhD.
Returning to Canada in 1969, John was seconded to Defence Research Establishment Atlantic (DREA) in Dartmouth NS as an Underwater Acoustician. In 1984, John retired from the Canadian Forces and Joined the Public Service in National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, where he served until his retirement in 1995. For the next 15 years, John worked as a consultant in Underwater Acoustics for various organizations and served on the Defence Science Advisory Board.
John was an enthusiastic cross-country skier and served as President of the Canadian Ski Marathon (1997 – 2000). In later years, he was an avid cyclist, swimmer, hiker, cross-country skier, vegetable gardener, and duplicate-bridge player.
A celebration of John’s life was held at the Prestige Lakeside Resort, in Nelson BC, on 6 April 2025. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
