We regret to advise of the death of Padre, the Reverend, George Dawson Beaver in Westlock, AB on 20 September 2009 at the age of 82 years.

George was a Second World War veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #97 in Westlock.

It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the sudden and untimely passing of our Colonel Commandant, Colonel Roger Kenwood St. John, OMM, CD (Ret'd) on 15 September 2009 in Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, BC in his 65^th year.

Colonel St. John had been the Canadian Military Engineer Branch Colonel Commandant since January 2008. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1944. In 1959 he joined the Royal Westminster Regiment and subsequently enrolled in the Regular Officer Training Programme in 1966 while attending the University of British Columbia. He graduated with distinction in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science, Forestry. After graduation, he undertook training at the Canadian Forces Fire Academy and his first appointment was as the Fire/Crash Rescue Chief at CFB Montreal. He went on to serve his country with true Engineering spirit during tours across Canada and Europe as well as on several United Nations missions in Cyprus, Pakistan, and Bosnia.

In 1972 he was assigned to 1 Airborne Field Squadron in Edmonton, AB. This posting included a peacekeeping tour in Cyprus in 1974. In 1975 he was promoted to Major and posted to CFB Gagetown as the Commanding Officer of 22 Field Squadron. This was followed by his assignment to NATO's Central Army Group Headquarters in Heidelberg, West Germany in 1977.

In 1980, Colonel St. John returned to Canada to attend Staff College in Toronto. This was followed by his assignment to Headquarters, 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Calgary, AB as G4. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1982 and returned to the Staff College as a member of the Directing Staff. In 1985 he was appointed as the Base Administration Officer of CFB Calgary where he was involved in a number of major projects including the "Museum of the Regiments" and assisting in the provision of military support to the Calgary Winter Olympics. In recognition of the instrumental role he played in creating the Calgary Centennial Arena and the Calgary Military Museum he was awarded an Honorary "Citizen of the Year" from the City of Calgary in 1987. His citation notes that he had "emerged as a model of good citizenship, forging a relationship between the citizens of Calgary and the members of CFB Calgary."

In 1988 he was promoted to Colonel and posted to National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa as the Director of Construction Engineering Control. In 1989 he was assigned as the Chief of Staff of a United Nations humanitarian mine awareness and clearance training mission in Pakistan for Afghan refugees. In 1991 Colonel St. John was posted to CFB Montreal as the Chief Engineer of Mobile Command. He was subsequently selected to attend the National Defence College in Kingston, ON in 1993 and was then appointed as Base Commander of CFB Chilliwack. At Chilliwack, he oversaw the base from 1994 until its closure in 1998. During the closure period, he was assigned as the Deputy Engineer/Corps Engineer Brigade Commander of NATO's Implementation Force in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In 1998 Colonel St. John retired from the Canadian Forces and formed his own consulting company that specialised in emergency management and business continuation planning. He also undertook several mine action contracts for the Department Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency in the Balkans and Africa.

After his retirement from the Canadian Forces, Roger enthusiastically involved himself in the community of Chilliwack - giving his time, energy and passion to many great organisations including; Rotary, Community Services, Chilliwack Hospice Society, BC Children's Hospital and Big Brothers. Colonel St. John was a past President of the Rotary Club of Chilliwack and had been extensively involved in community service projects. He was a member of numerous associations and had served on the Board of the British Columbia Corps of Commissionaires, Chilliwack Big Brothers, the Fraser Valley Regional District Planning Committee, and the Chilliwack Hospice Society Gala Committee. His enormous efforts were recognised in his being named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International.

Colonel St. John was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Canadian Military Engineers on 16 January 2008. He was passionate about the Engineers and took his duties very seriously. He thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with a new generation of Engineers and spoke often of his pride in their accomplishments.

A memorial service for Col Roger K. St. John will take place on Monday 28 September 2009 at the First Avenue Christian Assembly Church, 46510 First Avenue, Chilliwack, BC. Guests are asked to arrive by 1:30 PM for the start of the service at 1:30 PM. Dress for Serving Members is Service Dress 1A (with medals). Retired Members are encouraged to wear blazer/gray flannels (with medals). Guests are advised to bring a jacket and comfortable footwear for the open-air reception immediately following the service at approximately 4:00 PM at Case de Librico, 44843 South Sumas Rd, Chilliwack. We regret to advise of the passing of Master Warrant Officer Alan Mark Pernitzky, CD in Moose Jaw, SK on 8 September 2009 at the age of 46 as a result of an automobile accident. He was stationed at 15 Wing Moose Jaw as a Construction Engineering Supervisor.

Alan was born in Vancouver, BC but at a young age moved first to Dawson Creek, BC and then to Innsfail, AB where he attended High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Canadian Forces joining the Military Engineering family providing Construction Engineering support to a number of bases including Cold Lake, Moose Jaw and Dundurn.

A Memorial Service will be held on 14 September at the Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Beechwood National Cemetery, Ottawa, ON. In lieu of flowers donations in Alan's name may be made to the Salvation Army, 175 1st Ave. N.E., Moose Jaw, SK, S6H 0Y9. ^{{gdOct2015kh}}

We regret to advise that Corporal Jean-Francois Drouin was killed in action on 6 September 2009 in the Dand District, south-west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan at the age of 31. 

Jean-Francois was a Combat Engineer serving with 5^e Regiment du génie de combat in Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Valcartier, QC.  At the time of his death. he was serving with the 2^nd Battalion Royal 22^e Regiment Battle Group.  

Jean- Francois was a native of Quebec City, QC.   He joined the Canadian Forces in 2006 and after completing his Combat Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in CFB Gagetown, NB he was posted to 5^e Regiment du génie de combat.  He was killed as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED).  He was on his first operational deployment.

A repatriation ceremony was held in CFB Trenton on 9 September.  Visitation will take place at the St-Louis de Courville Church, 2315, Royale Avenue, Beauport, QC from 9:00 to 10:30 on 19 September.  A religious service will follow.  Interment of his ashes will take place at a later date in the parish cemetery.  ^{{gd/rtJan2017dc}  [zsp, zsd, zcc]}

We regret to advise of the death of Major Yannick Francois Stephane Pépin, MSM*, CD who was killed in action on 6 September 2009 in the Dand District, southwest of Kandahar City, Afghanistan at the age of 36.  Yannik was a Military Engineer serving with 5^e Regiment du génie de combat in Canadian Forces Base Valcartier, QC. 

Yannick was born in Arthabaska, QC.  He studied civil engineering in Trois-Rivières and worked for an engineering firm there and in Louisville. He joined the Reserves in 1991 as an Artilleryman with 62^e Régiment d'artillerie de campagne, ARC in Shawinigan.  Yannik transferred to  the Regular Force in 1999  and received his commission after completing his training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Gagetown NB. He then joined 5^e Regiment du génie de combat.

Yannik deployed to Afghanistan on Operation ATHENA for his first time in January 2004 with the headquarters of the International Brigade in Kabul. His second mission to Afghanistan was with the 2^nd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment Battle Group and started in April 2009. At the time of his death, Yannik was commanding 51^e Escadron du génie de combat in support of the battle group when he was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED).  

A repatriation ceremony was held in CFB Trenton on 9 September.  Visitation will take place on 15 September from 7:00 to 10:00 PM and on 16 September from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the Complexe Funéraires Sylvio Marceau, 1460 rue Notre-Dame, Ancienne-Lorette, QC.  Funeral will be on 16 September at 11:30 at the Ste-Jeanne D'Arc Chapel on CFB Valcartier.  He will be buried in the Parc Commemoratif de la Souvenance in Quebec City.  ^{{gd/rtJan2017dc}  [zsd]}

Notes: 

           *  Major Pépin was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on 2 February 2011. The citation reads:

"Major Pépin deployed to Afghanistan in April 2009 as commander of a squadron of combat engineers supporting the Royal 22e Régiment Battle Group. His leadership and technical expertise enabled those under his command to successfully clear roadways that were vital to the movement of Canadian, Afghan and coalition soldiers. Tragically, he was killed in action by an improvised explosive device while commanding a mounted patrol on 6 September 2009. Major Pépin’s unwavering dedication to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan saved lives and brought great credit to Canada."

Major Pépin's home town of Warwick QC dedicated a park in his honour on 12 November 2011.

We regret to advise that Master Warrant Officer R.G. (Dick) Belgrove (Retd) passed away in Chilliwack on 5 September after a lengthy illness.

Dick began his long Military Engineer career as a 6^th Intake Sapper Apprentice.

A reception to honour Dick's life will be held at the Cultus Lake Hall at 11:30 Friday 11 September.

We regret to advise the death of Sapper Harry Ruskin (Ret’d) on 30 August 2009 at the Misericordia Health Centre in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 94 years.

Harry was born in Rorketon, MB.  At the age of 17, he moved to Kenora, ON and worked in a pulp and paper mill until 1939.  He joined the Canadian Army in 1940. He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Engineers and trained in Portage la Prairie, MB; Dundurn, SK; Winnipeg, MB and Chilliwack, BC.  Harry went overseas in 1941 and served as a Sapper with the 13^th Field Company in the 1^st Canadian Corps Engineers and saw action in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland.  He was discharged in 1946 and moved to Winnipeg where he worked for Canada Packers for seven years and then at the Canadian National Railways Workshops as a Carman for 33 years until he retired in 1980.

A funeral service will be held on 3 September at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg at 11:00 AM with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. ^{{dcNov2017gd}} 

We regret to advise that CWO Frank Froese (Ret'd), died in Prince George, BC on 28 August 2009.

Born in 1925 in Winkler, MB, Frank passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness. A WW II veteran, he served a full career as a Field Engineer and whose appointments included CFB Chilliwack Base Chief Warrant Officer as well as Squadron Sergeant Major of 2 Field Squadron and 4 Field Squadron.

No funeral by request and no flowers or donations please. Burial will be at Royal Canadian Legion Wall Cemetery in Chilliwack, BC. Frank's ashes will be placed in Royal Canadian Legion Wall Cemetery in Chilliwack on 19 September. No service but all are invited to meet the family to pay your respects at 2:00 pm at Branch #4 Royal Canadian Legion, Mary St., Chilliwack. Dress is casual.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Harold V. Chisamore on 14 August 2009.

Harold was born in Port Arthur, ON, in 1923. When he enlisted In 1941 he wanted to build Canadian hospitals and camps in England. After his Sapper Training he was sent overseas and joined 1^st Canadian Construction Company. Harold worked on the construction of camps and hospitals for the increasing number of Canadan troops in England and also worked on construction of the Canadian Army prison at Headley Downs. In 1942 he and his two partners designed and built the first concrete Nissan hut.

In 1944 Harold was transferred to the Canadian Engineering Training Depot at Cove, England, where he learned to build Bailey Bridges and roads in preparation for the Invasion of Europe. He then joined a Field Engineering Company in Belgium and built roads from Holland into Germany and worked on the Floating Bailey Bridge near Cleve. At war's end and back in England he demolished air raid shelters in Aldershot while waiting repatriation to Canada.

Harold was discharged in November 1945 and was subsequently a Legion member for 62 years.

We regret to advise of the peaceful death of Joseph “Josie” Iaci in Vancouver, BC on 9 August 2009. He was born in Vancouver in 1915.

Josie served in WW II after joining the 6^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in North Vancouver in June 1940 shortly before the unit left for Debert, NS. A Pioneer and a carpenter by trade, he assisted the unit with the construction of Camp Debert before deploying to England. He landed on Juno Beach in one of the later waves on D-Day. Josie served continuously with the 6^th in Normandy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until the end of the war. Josie was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 291 Richmond, BC.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on 14 August2009 at Holy Name Catholic Parish, 4925 Cambie Street, Vancouver, with entombment to follow at Ocean View Cemetery, South Mausoleum, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC. We regret to advise that Corporal Christian Bobbitt was killed in action on 1 August 2009, in the Zhari district, west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan at the age of 23 years. 

Christian was a Combat Engineer serving with 5^e Regiment du génie de combat in Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Valcartier, QC.  At the time of his death, he was serving with the 2^nd Battalion Royal 22^e Regiment Battle Group.

Christian was born in Sept-Iles, QC but spent the majority of his life in the village of La Romaine, QC.  He joined the Canadian Forces in 2006 and after completing his Combat Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in CFB Gagetown, NB he was posted to 5^e Regiment du génie de combat.  Christian was on his first operational deployment and was killed when his resupply convoy was struck by two improvised explosive devices (IED) in the Zhari district, west of Kandahar City.

A repatriation ceremony was held in CFB Trenton on 4 August.  Visitation will take place 10 August from 7:00 to 10:00 P.M. at the Sylvio Marceau Funeral Home, 1460 Notre-Dame Street, Ancienne-Lorette, QC.  A military funeral service will take place at the Ste-Jeanne D'Arc Catholic Chapel on CFB Valcartier on 11 August at 11:00. We regret to advise that Sapper Joseph Pierre Gilbert Matthieu Allard was killed in action on 1 August 2009, in the Zhari district, west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan at the age of 20. 

Matthieu was a Combat Engineer serving with 5^e Regiment du génie de combat in Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Valcartier, QC.  At the time of his death, he was serving with the 2^nd Battalion Royal 22^e Regiment Battle Group. He was born in Val-d’Or, QC and joined the Canadian Forces in 2007. After completing his Combat Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in CFB Gagetown, NB he was posted to 5^e Regiment du génie de combat. Matthieu was on his first operational deployment. and was killed when his resupply convoy was struck by two improvised explosive devices (IED).

A repatriation ceremony was held in CFB Trenton on 4 August.  Visitation will take place on 12 August from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Blais Funeral Home, 582 Centrale avenue, Val D'Or, QC.  A funeral service will take place at the Saint-Edmond-de-Vassan church in Vassan, QC on 13 August at 11:00 followed by an interment ceremony in the church cemetery.    ^{{gd/rtJan2017dc} [zcc]}

We regret to advise that Robert Stephen Butler passed away on 27 July 2009 in Sidney, BC, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in 1934 in St. John's, NFL, Robert earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (1958) from Nova Scotia Technical College and a Masters of Engineering (1972) from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Robert was Commanding Officer of 56 Field Squadron 1964-66 Robert was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Newfoundland, Alberta, and British Columbia. He built and ran his own engineering consulting firm in St. John's and Corner Brook for many years before joining Stanley Associates in Calgary and became Vice President Engineering before retiring. Robert's career achievements include such significant projects as the Alpac Pulp and Paper Mill, the Calgary Light Rail Transit System, the Old Man River Dam, and involvement in the early stages of the Confederation Bridge to PEI.

Robert was laid to rest in a private service held at Hatley Memorial Gardens in Victoria, BC.

We regret to advise that Corporal Joseph Robert Martin Dubé was killed in action on 14 June 2009 in the Panjwai District, south-west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan, at the age of 35 years. 

Martin was a Combat Engineer serving with 5^e Regiment du génie de combat in Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Valcartier, QC and was serving as a member of the Joint Task Force Headquarters.

Martin was born in Quebec City, QC.  He joined the Canadian Forces in 2003 and after completing his Combat Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in CFB Gagetown, NB he was posted to 5^e Regiment du génie de combat.  He was killed when he responded to a call to neutralise two improvised explosive devices (IED) and one of them exploded.  He was on his first operational deployment.

A repatriation ceremony was held on 17 June at CFB Trenton, ON.  Visitation will take place at the Claude Charest Funeral Home, 21 Jolicoeur Street, Sainte-Catherine de-la-Jacques-Cartier, QC on 23 June from 9:00 to 11:00 followed by a military funeral at Ste-Jeanne d'Arc Catholic Chapel, CFB Valcartier, at 11:30. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Richard Watkinson (Ret’d) on 12 July 2009 at the age of 90 years.

Richard was born in Central Butte, SK and was a veteran of the Second World War.  He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Rossland, BC Branch #14 for 65 years.  ^{{dcNov2017gd} [zsd, zcc, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Gordon W. Bowers (Ret’d) on 2 July 2009 in Barrie, ON at the age of 87 years.

Gordon was a Second World War veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Dr. W.C. Little Branch #147.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper John H. “Jack” Valentine (Ret'd) peacefully in Toronto ON on 30 June 2009 at the age of 87.

Jack was a WW II veteran who served with the 8^th Field Squadron of the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he spent most of his working life with Loblaws.  Jack was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Brigadier O. M. Martin Branch 345 in Toronto and a member of Oshawa Masonic Lodge Cedar Branch.

A funeral service will be held at Highland Funeral Home, 3280 Sheppard Ave East, Toronto on 4 July with visitation preceding the service. Interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Markham ON.  Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. ^{{gdMay2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Ronald “Ron” Raymond Bastien, CD (Ret’d) of Ingleside ON at the Winchester, ON Hospital on 30 June 2009 in his 66^th year.

Ron served in the Canadian Air Force and Canadian Military Engineers for 32 years.  He began his career as a non-commissioned member but was commissioned from the ranks to the rank of Captain in 1983.  After his Military Engineering Officer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, BC,  Ron was posted to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, ON to the office of the Chief of Construction and Properties.  This posting was followed in 1989 by a tour with the Base Construction Engineering Office in Canadian Forces Base Ottawa.  Ron then returned to National Defence Headquarters with the office of the Director General of Postings and Careers for other ranks where he served from 1991 - 1992 from where he retired.  Ron was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #108 in Winchester.  

Visitation will take place on 6 July at the Parker Funeral Home, 28 Sir James Morris Drive, Morrisburg, ON where the memorial service will be held in the chapel at 2:00 PM.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.  ^{{gdMay2018dc}  [zsd, zcc, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the sudden death of Master Corporal Lloyd Arsenault CD, (Ret'd) on 29 June 2009 in hospital in Ottawa, ON at the age of 71. 

Lloyd served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Military Engineers for 32 years, retiring in Petawawa, ON in 1989.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Petawawa Branch #517.

We regret to advise of the death of Staff Sergeant Anthony “Andy” Stonegate Brooks (Ret’d) in Vernon, BC on 28 June 2009 at the age of 89 years.

Andy was born in Louth, England.  At the age of 14, he joined the crew of a deep-sea trawler, spending much time on the open waters.  While at the port of Montevideo, Uruguay, Andy witnessed the scuttling of the German pocket battleship, the Graf Spey.  Andy returned to England and joined the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Engineers where he served on the continent including participating in the Battle of the Scheldt in the Netherlands.  

With the culmination of the Second World War, Andy continued his career with the RCE being posted to the Chilliwack, BC Garrison in 1946 where he taught at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering.  In those years he was also involved in establishing a military presence in the Canadian Arctic.  In 1955 he was posted to the Vernon, BC Garrison where he worked as Superintendant of Works until his retirement in 1960.  In 1960, he embarked on a new career by establishing Vernon’s first equipment rental shop, Vernon Rent-All, which he operated until his retirement in 1986. 

There will be a funeral service at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Chapel at 4303 Pleasant Valley Road, Vernon, B.C. on 4 July at 11:00 AM.  Donations may be made to the British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC or the Vernon Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.  ^{{gdFeb2017dc} [zpi, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper John Anthony “Tony” LaRusic (Ret’d) at home in Taigh‘na Mara, Glace Bay, NS on 23 June 2009 at the age of 95 years.

Tony was born in Bay St. Lawrence, Victoria County, NS.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He saw action in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.  Tony was a carpenter by trade and worked in the forest in his early years, later working in Sydney, NS for Chappell’s Ltd.   He stayed in England after the war and worked for Odhams Limited in Watford until 1959 when he and his family returned to Canada and he rejoined his former employer, Chappell for a year.  He then went to work  as an airport attendant with the Department of Transport at Sydney, NS Airport until his retirement.  

At Tony’s request, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Sydney at 10:00 AM on 25 June with interment to take place on 26 June at 11:00 AM in St. Margaret’s Cemetery, St. Margaret’s Village, NS.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one’s choice.  ^{{dcMay2017gd} [zsd, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Robert “Bobby” John Berard (Ret'd) of St. Albert, AB on 20 June 2009 at the age of 88 years.

Bobby was a veteran of the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He served in Italy and Northwest Europe. Bobby was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, St. Albert Branch. He was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Frederick Weight Philpot, MC (Ret’d) peacefully at the Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital, Scarborough, ON on 12 June 2009 in his 92^nd year.

Frederick was a WW II veteran who served with the 12^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in Italy.  On 1 November 1944, while in support of “C” Squadron of the 27^th Lancers, a bridge was found to be necessary to enable the armoured cars to proceed.  Although under constant shell fire, Frederick decided to immediately build a 50-foot single Bailey Bridge, all the while under heavy mortar fire.  By reason of his decision to bridge immediately, the enemy was caught unawares and suffered severe casualties.  For his actions, Frederick was awarded an immediate Military Cross.

Visitation will be held at the Scarborough Chapel of McDougall and Brown, 2900 Kingston Road on 16 June from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on 17 June at 2:00 p.m.   Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto or to the Parkinson Society of Canada.   ^{{gdDec2016kh} [zpp, zcc]}

We regret to advise to death of Sapper Arthur “Art” Sydney Delaney (Ret’d) in Abbotsford BC on 12 June 2009 at the age of 75 years.

Art was a veteran of the Korean War where he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After leaving the Army, he worked for Security at Woodlands, until it closed, followed by security in Maple Ridge, BC and Scott Paper Mill in Mission, BC.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Abbotsford Branch # 15 as well as a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Aerie 2726) & Retired Eagles Activity Club-Aerie 2726.

It was Arthur’s wishes to have no service at this time. There will be a private service at a later date to lay his ashes.

We regret to advise of the death of John "Pinky" Richardson after a brief illness, on 11 June 2009, at the age of 64 years.

John was a Heavy Equipment Operator who served a full career with the Canadian Military Engineers.

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Richard “Dick” C.E. Bray (Ret’d) peacefully at the Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, ON on 10 June 2009 in his 96^th year.

Dick was born in Ottawa, ON. After graduating from Queen's University Kingston in mining engineering in 1937, Dick served as a Lieutenant and Captain with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Italy and Northwestern Europe. He served successively with 9^th Field Park Company, 14^th Field Company, 10^th Field Company and 12^th Field Company.

After the war, Dick worked for Noranda Mines in the Pamour Porcupine gold mine in Porcupine Northern Ontario and was part of the start-up team for the Geco copper mine in Manitouwadge, Northern Ontario. In 1969 he returned to Queen's University to earn a Masters of Science degree and then worked for Falconbridge at the Raglan Lake nickel mine, Raglan Northern Ontario. After retiring to Kingston, Dick became active in the Rotary Club, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Having suffered major hearing loss during the war, Dick was a strong advocate for the hard of hearing and helped to establish the Kingston Hard of Hearing Club and organized and encouraged the use of hearing assistance devices.

Visitation will be at the Robert J. Reid & Sons Funeral Home, Kingston on 12 June. A memorial service will be held at Sydenham Street United Church, Kingston, on 13 June. In memory of Dick, the family would be grateful for donations to Sydenham Street United Church, the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, or your chosen charity.

We regret to advise of the death of John Henry McNeil of Westville NS on 8 June 2009 at the Northumberland Veterans’ Unit in Pictou NS. John was 84 years old.

John was born and raised in Westville. He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War and served in England, France, Belgium and Holland. He took part in 3^rd Canadian Division’s assault on Normandy on D-Day.

After the war, John worked for the Canadian National Railroad for 34 years before retiring. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an avid curler with the Westville Curling Club, winning many trophies and awards. He also had a passion for harness horse racing. He was active in many organizations including Branch #35 Royal Canadian Legion Westville, Branch #28 Royal Canadian Legion Stellarton, the Normandy Veterans Association and the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Memory Club. 

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on 12 June 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Eagles Funeral Home, Westville, NS. The Royal Canadian Legion will conduct a service at 6:30 PM at the Funeral Home. A private family committal will be held at a later date. We regret to advise of the death of Richard Thomas Forchon of Ajax, ON at the age of 81 on 3 June 2009.

Richard was born and lived most of his life in Toronto. He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the 2^nd Field Park Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ajax Branch #322.

We regret to advise of the death of Walter Ingwal Johnson of Kelowna BC on 31 May 2009 at the age of 78 years.

Walter was born in Kelowna. He was a Korean War having served in Korea for two years including United Nations peacekeeping with 3 Field Squadron during 1954. He served a total of nine years in the Royal Canadian Engineers before returning to Kelowna and starting a career with the city.veteran 

We regret to advise of the death of James Harvey “Jim” Bates of Truro NS on 29 May 2009 at the age of 88 years. Jim was a  resident at The Mira, a long term care facility in Truro.

Jim was born in Truro NS and grew up in Stewiacke East NS. He enlisted in Halifax on 24 November 1942 and was initially assigned to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders.  He took his Basic Training in Yarmouth NS and his Advanced Training at Camp Aldershot NS. He was later sent on a bricklaying course in New Glasgow NS while awaiting orders to be sent overseas.  He boarded a ship in Halifax on 6 September 1943 but after a day and a half, a submarine was spotted and the ship turned back to Halifax until it got the all-clear to proceed.  Jim eventually got to England with his unit and landed in Normandy.  He was wounded at Caen on 18 July 18 1944 and was sent to England to recover.  He was sent back into action about two months later and was transferred to the 9^th Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers as a truck driver.  He stayed with the squadron until just three weeks before the fighting ended when he was admitted to hospital suffering what was then called 'battle fatigue'.

After Jim was demobilized, he returned to civilian life and worked at carpentry until he opened his own business.  He retired in 1984. Jim was an honorary member of the Truro Fire Brigade and a Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion Colchester Branch 26 in Truro for 63 years.  

There will be no visitation by request. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute will be held at 2:00 PM on 1 June 2009 followed by a celebration of life service and reception in Colchester Community Funeral Home in Truro.  Interment will be in Robie Street Cemetery in Truro.   Donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Colchester Branch 26, Truro Building Fund or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia^{. [dcSep19gd} [zsd, zpp]}

We regret to advise of the death of John Stratechuk peacefully at the Veterans Village, Sherbrooke Community Center, Saskatoon, SK on 23 May 2009, six days short of his 89^th birthday. 

John was born and raised on a farm northwest of Sheho, SK.  He enlisted in the Canadian Army in January 1942 and served with the Kings Own Rifles of Canada in BC and in Prince Albert, SK.  In April 1945 he transferred into the Royal Canadian Engineers; however, the war ended before he went overseas.  After the war, John farmed south of Sheho until 1964 when he moved to Yorkton, SK and was employed at Morris Rod Weeder until his retirement. John was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #77, in Yorkton.

A Celebration of Life Tea will be held on 29 May from 2 to 4 pm in the Common Room at Veterans Village at Sherbrooke Community Center, 401 Acadia Dr., Saskatoon, SK. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper David Noel “Dave” Foss (Ret’d) of Hazenmore, SK on 24 May 2009 at the age of 81 years.

Dave was born in Aneroid, SK on Christmas Day - hence his middle name.  He grew up on a farm south of Aneroid until he moved to Lister, BC with his family.  He had been working in logging, mining, and construction when he joined the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in May 1951.  He then transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in Korea.  He left the Army in 1954 and returned to Lister. Dave went back to mining, logging and construction again. He married in 1958 and started farming and raising cattle south of Hazenmore, SK.  Dave was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #85 in Aneroid.

Dave’s funeral will be held on 29 May at 2:00 PM in the Aneroid United Church with both Royal Canadian Legion and Masonic Rites. Donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association.  Interment to follow in the Aneroid Cemetery. ^{{dcJan19gd} [zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal William “Bill” Roy Paul of Vogar, MB at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB on 22 May 2009 at the age of 70 years.

Bill was born on the Lake Manitoba First Nation Reserve.   He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 1960s and served with 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack, BC and 4 Field Squadron in Germany.  He excelled as a hockey player and was a member of the Chilliwack Intermediates in the New Westminster & Coquitlam Intermediate Hockey League.  Bill was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ashern, MB Branch #211 and was a strong supporter of the Retired Sappers Association.

We regret to advise that Captain Charles Edward Whitten, BSc. Mil., B.A.Sc., P.Eng. (Retd) died at Toronto on 21 May 2009 after a short illness.

Born in 1923 in Montreal, Charles graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1942. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada during WWII and participated in the liberation of Holland. After the war and graduation from the University of Toronto in 1948, Chuck worked at Canadian Car and Foundry in Montreal, returning to Toronto in 1951 to work at Continental Can of Canada where he rose to the level of Mill Manager. He then began a long career at Canadian Wallpaper (Reed) reaching the position of Vice President of Manufacturing. Chuck also worked as a project manager for Reed Limited and later as a consultant.

Friends called at the Trull Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 2704 Yonge Street on 26 May and the funeral service was held in the chapel on 27 May. In lieu of flowers, remembrances made to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise of the death of Michael Charles Major in New Westminster BC peacefully on 19 May 2009 at the age of 89.

Michael was born near Gimli MB but at an early age moved to New Westminster.  He was a WWII veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and saw action with 6 Field Company during the D-Day Landings and throughout North West Europe.

Michael lived most of his life in New Westminster.   He worked for 50 years with MacMillan Bloedel, New Westminster Division, and retired in 1985 in the position of Director of Plant Safety.

We regret to advise of the death of Merton "Mert" Musselman on 18 May 2009 at the Extendicare Tecumseh Residence in Tecumseh, ON at the age of 89 years.

Mert was a veteran of the Second World War who fought overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After demobilisation, he went to work for the Ford Motor Company as an Electrical Engineer from where he retired after many years of service.  He was a member and a Past Treasurer of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International as well as an Elder with Parkwood Gospel Temple.

Visitation will be held on 20 May from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 PM at Victoria Greenlawn Memorial Chapel & Visitation Centre, 1525 Highway #3, Oldcastle, ON.  A funeral service will be held in the chapel on 21 May at 11:00 AM. We regret to advise the death of Superintendent Donald Neil “Don” Brown (Ret’d) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on 16 May 2009 in Burnaby BC.

Born in Birmingham, England in 1919, he immigrated to Winnipeg, MB at the age of three where he lived until the start of WWII when he joined 12^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. He saw action in Italy and attained the rank of Sergeant Major.

A year after demobilization, Don re-enlisting as a second lieutenant in Chilliwack, but left the Army in 1947 to join the British Columbia Provincial Police, which eventually amalgamated with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served in Burnaby, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver - 22 of those years in forensic laboratories. After a 26 year career with the RCMP, he retired as the Officer-in-Charge of Vancouver Crime Detection Laboratory with the rank of Superintendent. He authored the book: "Your Questions - But My Answers: The Scientific Examination of Questioned Documents". In 2007 the RCMP named its Edmonds, Burnaby, BC Community Policing Office after him.

Don served on the Burnaby School Board for two years, the Burnaby Council for six years, the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission for 10 years, President of the College for the Retired for nine years and was Chairman of the Burnaby Centennial Committee. In 1992 he was awarded the Burnaby Citizen of the Year Award and in 1993, a Freeman of Burnaby. At age 81, Don wrote a book on the history of the former B.C. Provincial Police Force.

A Celebration of Life will be held on 5 June at The Bill Copeland Sports Centre, 3676 Kensington Ave., Burnaby.

We regret to advise of the death of Honorary Colonel Richard “Dick” Morden Mitchell (Ret’d) peacefully on 15 May 2009 in his 98^th year. 

Dick was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers overseas (1939 -1945) in the United Kingdom, North Africa, Italy and North West Europe.  He landed in Sicily in November 1943 as Commanding Officer of the 9^th Field Park Company and fought in both the Sicilian and Italian Campaigns.  After the Italian Campaign Dick - then in command of 14^th Field Company - proceeded to Northwest Europe.  Following the war Dick commanded the 2^nd Field Engineer Regiment in Toronto (1949 - 1952) and later was its Honorary Colonel.

Dick was a graduate of Queen's University, Kingston ON with a B.Sc. in 1935 and from Harvard University with a Masters in Business Administration in 1948.  Throughout his career, he held management positions with several large Toronto-based companies including Carrier Engineering, Dunham-Bush and Lake Ontario Cement.  He was a long-time member of St. George's on-the-Hill Anglican Church and Weston Golf Club, both in Toronto.

Visitation will be at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West on 19 May.  Funeral service will be held at St. George's on-the-Hill Anglican Church, 4600 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke ON on20May.   Interment to take place at St. George's Churchyard.  Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. ^{{gdJun2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Charles “Charlie” Owen Pettifer in Victoria BC on 13 May 2009 in his 80^th year. 

Charlie was born in Birmingham, England and served in the British Army as a musician in The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  He immigrated to Canada and settled in Chilliwack BC.  He joined the Canadian Military as a musician and played with the Band of the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Royal Canadian Navy Naden Bands.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Alvin Joseph Doiron, CD (Ret’d) peacefully on 11 May 2009 at McNally House, Grimsby ON at the age of 79 years.

Alvin served with the Canadian Military Engineers for some 22 years in our field squadrons and much of it being in the Motor Transport Section. He served much of his career with 1 Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers in Germany (1955 - 57) and in Petawawa, ON from where he retired. Al was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Port Hope, ON Branch #30.

We regret to advise of the death of RCAF Group Captain Kenneth Alexander McLeod ( Ret'd) who died peacefully on 8 May 2009.

Ken served as Navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW II until 1945. After the war he resumed his studies at the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Ken rejoined the RCAF in 1948 in the Construction Engineering Branch and retired in 1964 as a Group Captain. He then pursued a Public Service career at National Defence Headquarters. Ken's career at NDHQ included appointments as Director General of Engineering and Construction, Director General Quartering, Director General Construction and Director General of Properties and Utilities.

Friends and family are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe, Ave. At Richmond Rd. 10 May from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. A Funeral Service to celebrate Ken's life will be held in the Chapel on Monday, 11 May 2009 at 1:00 pm. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Harold Edwin Walker (Ret'd) of Fergus, ON on 7 May 2009 in his 88^th year.

Harold was born in Mount Forest ON and was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Fergus Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

A Royal Canadian Legion service will be held at 1845 hrs on Sunday, 10 May 2009 at the Chapel of the Graham Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Monday, 11 May 2009 at 1100 hrs in the funeral home chapel. Harold will be interred in the Belsyde Cemetery in Fergus. We regret to advise of the death of Brigadier General William Kirby Lye, MBE, MiD, CD on 6 May 2009 in his 91^st year.

BGen Lye was an RMC graduate who went overseas during the Second World War with 16^th Field Company and was later Second-in-Command of 1^st Field Company. In England, he was also Chief Instructor of the Engineer Reinforcement Unit. He was Mentioned in Despatches and appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his distinguished service in 1944 as Staff Officer Royal Engineers, Headquarters 2 Canadian Corps.

BGen Lye's post-war appointments include: Deputy Commander, Canadian Forces Base Units, Middle East (United Nations Emergency Force); Commander, Camp Chilliwack and Commandant, Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering; Commander Canadian Base Units (Europe); Commander, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island Area; Chief of Staff, Administration, at Headquarters Mobile Command; Senior Assistant Adjutant General and Directors General Ordnance Systems and Land Operations in Canadian Forces Headquarters. BGen Lye retired in 1973 after his assignment as Commandant Royal Military College, Kingston.

We regret to advise of the death of Kenneth Oliver “Ken” Wick on 6 May 2009 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay, ON at the age of 72 years.

Ken was born on Thompson Island, Lake of the Woods, ON and lived there his first five years before moving to the Sunshine Valley near Nipigon, ON.  At the age of 16 he moved west and after working in the construction industry, He joined the Royal Canadian  Engineers in 1952 and served in the 57^th Independent Field Squadron in Chilliwack, BC and 1 Airborne Troop in Calgary, AB. 

Ken left the army in 1956 and went to work as a forester for Ontario Hydro and later as a rigger at the Red Rock, ON paper mill.  He was very active in the Nipigon community holding membership in various committees as well as being an events’ organiser.  He was a member of the Lions Club, the Fall Fishing Festival Committee, the Nipigon Figure Skating Club and Elk’s Hockey as a coach and referee.  He was also an Elder of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Nipigon.  In 1993 Ken was awarded the Nipigon Citizen of the Year award.

Visitation will be held at the Epiphany Lutheran Church, 499 Dewe Avenue, Thunder Bay followed by a funeral service on 12 May at 11:00 AM.  Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.   ^{{gdApr2017dc}  [zsd, zpp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Ralph Joseph Landry (Ret'd) on 2 May 2009.

Ralph was born in Petit de Grat, NS in 1923 and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in Halifax in 1943. He took advanced training in Yarmouth, NS and then completed his training at Camp Petawawa, ON. Ralph participated in the D-Day invasion on 6 June 1944 and fought through Europe until VE Day. He was discharged in April 1946. He was a member of the Isle Madame Branch in Arichat NS.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Ralph will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Petit De Grat with burial to follow in the Star of the Sea Cemetery.  with Rev. Memorial donations can be made to the Veteran's Comfort Fund or the ALS Society of Nova Scotia.

We regret to advise of the death of Robert “Bob” Charles Harrison peacefully on 1 May 2009 at Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, in his 92nd year.

Bob fought in WW II with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 16^th Field Company of Montreal. He landed on Juno Beach on D-Day at H-Hour plus 1. He carried on into the liberation of Holland, fighting through to the Rhine into Germany.

We regret to advise that Sapper Kurt Norton passed away 30 April 2009 in Suffield at the age of 25.

Born in New Westminster, BC, Kurt enrolled in the Canadian Forces in August 2007. After completing his Combat Engineering trades training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, Kurt was posted to 1 Combat Engineering Regiment in September 2008. He was preparing for his first operational deployment on Task Force 3-09.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday,12 May 2009 at 11:00am at St. Francis de Sales Church, 6610 Balmoral St., Burnaby, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

We regret to advise of the death of Robert D. Ferris at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, Toronto, ON on 29 April 2009 in his 90^th year.

Robert was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in 8^th Field Squadron. 

Visitation will be at the Trull 'North Toronto' Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 2704 Yonge Street, on 1 May from 7-9 p.m.  A Funeral Service will be held on 2 May at Glenview Presbyterian Church, Glenview Avenue, at 11 o'clock. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations may be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.    ^{{gdOct2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Mervyn Drew (Ret’d) at home in Ayres Cliff, QC on 29 April 2009 at the age of 89 years.

Drew was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Engineer who served in the Second World War with the 2^nd Field Park Company that served in both the Italian and Northwest European Campaigns. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ayer’s Cliff Branch #128,

The family will receive condolences on 3 May from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and again between 7:00  and 9:00 PM at the Cass Funeral Home in Ayer’s Cliff. The funeral service will be held on 4 May at 3:00 PM in the Beulah United Church.
