The Valley Inn Road Bailey bridge is named after the historic hotel at that location and opened in the 1820s when this road was the main connection between Burlington and Hamilton where Grindstone Creek connects to Hamilton Harbour. The original bridge closed about 100 years later in 1928 and a new single-span timber bridge was built on the same stone abutments. 

Unfortunately, this replacement bridge was damaged beyond repair by a transport truck in 1964. The Royal Canadian Engineers built a 'temporary’ Bailey bridge that same year using DND materials. Although it was intended to be temporary, the Bailey bridge was eventually bought by the city and remained open for 45 years. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 2006 and to pedestrians in 2009.
