CWO/Adjuc Byron Smith
Chief Warrant Officer Smith joined the CAF in the summer of 1979. Upon completion of his recruit training in Cornwallis he then went to CFB Borden for Cook training and then was posted right back to CFB Cornwallis later that same year. He stayed there until Oct 1983 when he then applied for a remuster to 141 Topographical surveyor. After completion of his Topo Survey TQ 4/5 training, he took part in OP Arctic 85,87 and OP Northland 89,90 Arctic survey mapping missions, OP Bouguer 91,92,93 Yukon Northern BC Gravit/GPS survey missions and numerous small survey taskings in Canada and abroad. In 1994 he was selected for and attended the 5 month US Army Advanced Terrain Analysis course in Fort Belvoir VA. In Jan 1995 CWO Smith was deployed to CanBat 2 in Visoko BiH(UNPROFOR), as part of the Geo Terrain Team. Returning to MCE in June he then deployed on COP Cobra from Aug to Oct 95. He then returned to Topo Survey Section in Nov 95 and deployed for the Alberta Gravity mission from Jan to Mar 96. CWO Smith was then selected to attend The University of New Brunswick from Aug 96 to May 97 and he received a diploma in Survey Engineering with a specialization in Geodetic Surveying. He was then posted to the newly renamed Geodetic Survey Section and completed a number of survey tasks for the military and NRCan. In Oct 1999 he deployed with a Geomatics Support Team(GST) to KFOR HQ Pristina Kosovo until March 2000. CWO Smith once again returned to MCE survey and deployed to Australia in May for EX MUST trials. He returned from this survey task in June 2000 and reported to the School of Military Mapping as an instructor until promoted to MWO in Aug 2003. He then deployed to SFOR HQ Sarajevo from Oct to Apr 2004. CWO Smith has held various positions including Squadron Sergeant-Major, Chief Instructor and Training MWO until promoted to CWO in May 2010. He is married to Pia and they currently reside in Ottawa.
