After more than 23 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Military Engineer Branch, Capt J.M. O'Hearn, CD will retire on 1 Aug 2025. A DwD reception will be held at the Oromocto Royal Canadian Legion branch 93 on 31 July 2025 from 1200-1600. Captain Johnny O’Hearn began his career on 23 Oct 2001 in Halifax, Nova Scotia as an infantry reservist with the Princess Louise Fusiliers (PLF). In 2004 Cpl O’Hearn received a component transfer to the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) and completed battle school in Meaford, ON. Posted to 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in Oromocto, NB, now Pte O’Hearn served with India Coy. During this posting, he completed Basic Para, deployed to Afghanistan on TF 1-07 and then in 2008, Cpl O’Hearn remustered to combat engineer.
In 2008, Cpl O’Hearn was posted to and completed DP1 at Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME) in Oromocto, NB. In Mar 09, Cpl O’Hearn was posted to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) in Edmonton, AB. Cpl O’Hearn received leadership training, completed the Urban Operations Instructor Course, deployed to Afghanistan on TF 3-10, held the Para Sect Comd position and was the first Section Comd presented with a maroon beret in 1 CER lines. An avid soccer player, he competed with the base soccer team winning multiple national titles and led the 1 CER Soccer Team to their first Ex Strong Contender Championship.
In 2015 Sgt O’Hearn was posted to CFSME and completed the following roles: DP1 Course NCO, UOI SME, Conventional Munitions Disposal IC, Bridging Rafting Watermanship Reconnaissance Tp WO and CFSME Ops MWO. For his efforts he was awarded the CFSME Instructor of the year, promoted to WO, received an CTC Comd Commendation and completed the American EOD Op Course.
In 2019 WO O’Hearn was posted to 4 ESR as the 43 SQ, received his commission and was posted to 2 CER in 2020. As part of 2 CER, Lt O’Hearn deployed immediately to Ukraine on Op UNIFIER, attended the Conduct After Capture Level C and was later employed concurrently as the Resource and Heavy Equipment Tp Comd. In 2022 Lt O’Hearn was posted to 2 CMBG HQ and served as G1 Svc’s Rep.
In 2023 Lt O’Hearn was promoted and posted to CFSME and served as the MWD Tp Comd.
Captain O’Hearn intends to stay in the area with his family and enjoy life.
