We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Peter Nikkel, CD (Ret'd) on 27 November 2020 at age 76 at his home in Sardis BC. Peter served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Canadian Military Engineers for over 34 years.

Born in Wingham MB, Peter was the oldest of seven siblings. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1961 and took his basic field engineer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC. Peter’s first posting was to 2 Field Squadron at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, NB but he was soon posted to Germany to serve with 4 Field Squadron. Peter returned to 2 Field Squadron in Gagetown after this tour but only for a year before he was posted back to Germany with 4 Field Squadron for his second posting there.

Peter returned to Canada in 1970 and joined 5e Escadron de génie du Canada at CFB Valcartier QC where he spent most of his the rest of his military career. An exception was for three years (1981-84) when he was posted to CFB Dundurn SK. After Dundurn, Peter returned to CFB Valcartier and was subsequently posted to CFB Chilliwack where he remained until he retired from the Canadian Forces. Peter retired in 1999 with the rank of Warrant Officer.

Upon retiring from the military, Peter began a second career driving a school bus for District 33 in Chilliwack where he loved hauling the kids around and explaining the facts of life to them. His passions in life were baseball in the earlier years of his military career, and later in Golf – at both of which he was very good. Peter’s other enjoyment was reading and he read any book he got his hands on.

A celebration of life will be held for Peter some time in the New Year.
