Early in his career, James discovered his true calling as a Combat Engineer. The challenges of the role, the camaraderie of his fellow engineers, and the opportunity to contribute to important missions resonated deeply with him. In March 2006, he also met Kathy, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong partner. Their connection was immediate and profound; they were truly soulmates. Shortly after completing his demanding trades training, and with Kathy by his side, James volunteered for deployment to Afghanistan. A decision which highlights his dedication to service and his willingness to face danger head-on.
The experience in Afghanistan undoubtedly shaped James, both personally and professionally. Having faced challenges, witnessed the realities of conflict, relying heavily on his training and the support of his comrades. This period solidified his commitment to the military and forged strong bonds with those he served alongside. Throughout his military journey, James was posted to various units, including:

    • 4 Engineer Support Regiment (4 ESR)
    • Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME)
    • Transition Centre Gagetown
    • Combat Training Center Headquarters (CTC HQ)

James was not just respected for his technical skills as a Combat Engineer; he earned the genuine admiration of his fellow soldiers across all ranks. This widespread respect stemmed from his remarkable character and how he interacted with others. He possessed a natural maturity that shone through in his words and actions. Whether dealing with a junior soldier or a senior officer, James treated everyone with the same level of respect and consideration. This created an atmosphere of trust and openness within his sphere of influence. His approachable demeanor made him a magnet for those seeking advice or needing a listening ear. Soldiers felt comfortable confiding in James, knowing he would not judge them and would offer thoughtful guidance. This often led to him playing the role of mediator, helping to resolve interpersonal conflicts that inevitably arise in high-pressure environments. James had a knack for diffusing tension and finding common ground between clashing personalities. He was a skilled communicator, able to understand different perspectives and guide individuals towards compromise and understanding. His calm, easygoing nature played a significant role in his success as a peacemaker. He rarely got flustered, even in challenging situations, and his composure helped others to remain calm as well.

This combination of maturity, approachability, and a calm demeanor made James an invaluable asset to his units. He fostered a sense of unity and camaraderie, ensuring that his fellow soldiers felt supported and valued. His impact extended far beyond his technical duties as an engineer; he played a crucial role in building strong and cohesive teams.

After twenty years of dedicated service to his country, James is thrilled to embrace retirement. He is looking forward to trading in his combat boots for more time with his family, especially in all his son Kylan’s sports adventures. Being that constant presence in supporting him in all his endeavors.
