We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant John David Rudy, CD (Ret’d) in Lanark Lodge, Perth ON at age 62 on Thursday, 29 March 2018. John was a veteran of 35 years of service in the Canadian Forces with numerous NATO and United Nations overseas deployments.
John was born in Marathon, ON on the north shore of Lake Superior. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1976, attending basic training in Cornwallis, NS and starting his basic infantry training in Wainwright, AB with the 1st Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). Upon completion of this training John stayed with the 1st Battalion and was sent on his first United Nations tour to Nicosia, Cyprus in 1978.
Upon his return from Cyprus, John completed a Parachutist Course in June 1979 and was subsequently posted to 2nd Airborne Commando in Petawawa, ON. There he completed his second UN tour to Cyprus in 1981 as a Recce Patrolman with the Pathfinders and as a Lynx driver. After this overseas deployment, John was posted to the 3rd Battalion PPCLI in Victoria, BC where he completed his third tour to Cyprus in 1988.
John then took the opportunity to remuster and he started his training in 1990 to become a Construction Technician with the Canadian Military Engineers. He also earned his Carpenter Licence and was then posted to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden, ON. In 1996 he deployed on a NATO tour to Bosnia. His next posting was to 1 Engineer Support Unit (1 ESU) in Moncton, NB where he deployed to the jungles of East Timor in October 1999. John was then posted to Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Gagetown NB in July 2003 for a tour that lasted five years. Following a posting to CFB Trenton in 2008, John returned to Gagetown in 2010 to the Engineer Branch as Contracts Manager for his final tour..
