We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Hugh Stewart “Stew” Gibson, CD (Ret’d), on 25 February 2025, peacefully at age 70 at the Miller Centre in St. John’s  NL, after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Stew joined the Canadian Forces in 1976 and was stationed with 2 Service Battalion in Petawawa ON, as a Supply Technician when he remustered to Topographic Surveyor in 1979 and joined the Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa, ON. He served with MCE for 17 years before retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1996 and following a second career in Newfoundland with Nautical Data International (NDI)

At Stewart’s request, there will be no commemoration service. His ashes will be scattered by his loved ones in Keels, Newfoundland this summer. Stewart asked that we make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in memoriam, wanting to leave behind something positive after his courageous battle.
