During the night of 25/26 September 1944, sappers of the 20th and 23rd Field Companies, Royal Canadian Engineers along with two British field companies, took part in Operation BERLIN. During the operation, some 2500 Allied airborne troops, surrounded and cut off by German forces with their backs to the Rhein River, were evacuated after the failure of Operation MARKET-GARDEN.
