We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Burns “Burnie” Alton Crowder (Ret’d) on 22 February 2015 in Duncan, BC.

Born in Roblyn, MB in 1927, Burnie served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 25 years and retired in 1979 at the rank of Master Warrant Officer. As a topographical Survey Engineer, Burnie traveled to remote parts of the Arctic doing cutting-edge mapping. He also worked on topographical assignments in interesting places around the world.

Burnie joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1954 and served his first four years as a Field Engineer with 1 Field Squadron in Germany. He then transferred to the Topographical Survey trade and spent the rest of his career with the Army Survey Establishment (laterly the Mapping and Charting Establishment). Career advancement saw him promoted to Sergeant in 1962 and Master Warrant Officer in 1971. His last appointment was Squadron Sergeant Major of the Topographic Squadron 1977-79, after which he retired from the Canadian Forces.

Burnie was a 46-year Legion member, a Mason plus a number of years as a Rotarian.
