After more than 36 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Military Engineers, MWO Sylvain St-Louis, CD, will retire on 28 July 2023. Master Warrant Officer Sylvain St-Louis enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in September 1985 as a YTEP III (Youth Training Employment Program) trainee as a Supply Technician.
After Qualification Level 3 training at CFB Borden in 1986, he transferred to 5 Canadian Service Battalion in Valcartier where he joined the Supply Company. With 5 CSB, he participated in several major exercises including Norway, RV87, RV89, and RV92 in Wainright, Alberta, and others brigade exercises in Gagetown, New Brunswick.
In 1994, he was transferred to Masset, British Columbia, for three years where he rediscovered the joy of hunting and fishing. From BC, he returned to CFB Valcartier in Québec City and joined 430 ETAH. From Québec, he deployed to Haiti in 1997 and to Bosnia in 1999. He was then transferred to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to work in the base warehouse for a year and then onto HMCS Toronto for two years.
In 2002, he remustered to Water, Fuel, and Environmental Technician. After his course, he was posted back to Halifax. He was then sent to CFB Edmonton, Alberta, for two years and then to 2 CER Petawawa, Ontario, for one year. With a promotion to the rank of Master Corporal, he was posted back to CFB Halifax as a maintenance section leader. He deployed to Afghanistan as a Sergeant from September 2008 to September 2009 as the FOB Frontenac Engineer, a position that allowed him to apply his knowledge in all construction engineering trades. In 2010, he was transferred to 3 Wing CFB Bagotville in Québec to work the Water, Fuels, and Environment section. He also deployed to Sicily, Italy, in 2011. In 2013, he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer and returned to CFB Valcartier. Over the next two years, he held the positions of Assistant Contracts Officer, Plumbing Department Supervisor, and Engineer of the Real Property Operations Group. Following his promotion to Master Warrant Officer in 2018, he was transferred to Ottawa where he is currently employed at the DCEO 2-1-3, Deployable Camp Systems for the Director General Support Equipment Management position.
MWO St-Louis will retire on 28 July 2023 after more than 36 years of service to the CAF. He will be accompanied in his retirement by his spouse, Louise, and his dog, Alley. He plans to enjoy his favourite hobbies of camping, boating, and fishing. He will have fond memories of the people he met during his time in the CAF.
