    We regret to advise of the death of Melvin “Mel” Arthur Crawford at Southwood Hospice in Calgary AB on 25 December 2009.

    Mel was born in Hanna AB in 1919 but moved to Calgary in 1924 where he attended Connaught Public School and Western Canada High School. He studied auto mechanics and woodworking. He began his thirty-eight year career with the Canadian National Railway in 1940 with the Bridge and Building department. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Army as a sapper in the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 2nd Division, serving in Britain and Europe until September 1945.

    After leaving the army he resumed his career with the CNR in Calgary and from 1971 to 1978 worked as an Engineering Coordinator for the Regional Engineering/Bridges and Structures department in the head office in Edmonton. In 1978 he retired but remained active with the CNR Veterans, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #285, the Calgary Sappers Club, and the Calgary Kerby Centre for older adults activity centre.

    A memorial gathering will be held at McInnis & Holloway Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary on 29 December. A family graveside service will be held at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
