Maj S.M. "Steve" Card, OMM, CD will retire from the Canadian Armed Forces on the 30 June 2018 with almost 37 years of loyal and dedicated service to the CAF and the Canadian Military Engineers. There will be a small function held at a later date. After 37 years of loyal and dedicated service, Maj S.M. (Steve) Card will retire from the CAF on 30 Jun 2018.
Tours include Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Israel (2) and Afghanistan (2).
Maj Steve Card joined the Army on 27 August 1981. After completing recruit training at CFB Cornwallis, he went to the CF School of Communication at CFB Kingston. Once his training was completed, he was posted to 2 CER. On 21 June of 1982, he remustered as a Field Engineer and went to Chilliwack to complete his QL3 course. Upon completion, he was posted to 22 Fd Sqn (4 ESR) in December 1982.
While at 22 Fd Sqn, Steve took the Leopard Driver course and became an Armoured Engineer Operator. On 15 May 1983, he deployed to Alert. On 30 June 1986, he along with his wife Anne Elizabeth was posted to Lahr Germany. Steve was promoted to Master Corporal in 1987, became a Heavy Equipment Operator in 1988 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1989.
While in Lahr, Steve deployed on his first tour to Daruvar, Croatia followed by Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was then posted to 1 CER in beautiful Chilliwack BC in 1992.
In 1993, Steve was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer. In 1997, as a newly promoted Master Warrant Officer, he deployed on his second tour, this time to Visoko, Bosnia in 1997 and then to Pristina, Kosovo in 1999. In 2000, Steve commissioned from the ranks and was posted as DCO of 3 Fd Engr Sqn.
In 2003, Steve deployed on his fourth tour, this time to the Middle East as an observer in Jerusalem, Israel. Upon his return, he was posted to Kingston where he was employed as a Plans and Works Officer. Not one to stay in the same place too long, Steve deployed on another tour, this time on his first of two tours to Afghanistan in 2007. Upon his return, he was posted to 1 ESU in Moncton and soon afterwards was promoted to his current rank of Major.
In 2009, he was posted to CFB Kingston and deployed on his second tour to Afghanistan. In August 2011, he was posted to LFAA HQ in Halifax. On October 2012, he returned to Jerusalem on his final tour and was rewarded with a posting to Ingolstadt, Germany. Finally, Steve was posted to Fort Leonard Wood Missouri in 2016, where he stayed until May of this year.
Steve’s last day of work will be on the 28th of June 2018. Steve and Anne will be staying in Cap Pele New Brunswick. A small gathering will be held at 5 CDSB Gagetown at a later date.
