LCol Surjit Singh Basarke, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Surjit Singh Basarke, CD of Markham ON on 27 November 2021 at the age of 80 years. LCol Basarke was a former Commanding Officer of 2nd Field Engineer Regiment in Toronto (now named 32 Combat Engineer Regiment).
Surjit transferred into 2 FER from the Royal Regiment of Canada at the rank of Major and held several regimental appointments in 2 FER, including Squadron Commander and Deputy Commanding Officer, before holding the appointment of Commanding Officer (1993 - 1996).
Surjit was heavily involved in the Army Cadet League and a strong supporter of No. 1888 32 CER Army Cadet Corps. In 2019 he was presented with a plaque and Service Medal pin in recognition of his outstanding dedication and service to the Army Cadet League of Ontario from 2001-2019. Surjit was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 in recognition of his contributions to the Military, Army Cadets and his community,.
In his civilian life, Surgit worked for Bell Telephone. He continued post-retirement to positions on the Bell Pioneers and eventually the Rose Corporation who financially supported the Cadets.
The funeral will be held on Sunday, 5 December 2021 at 4:00 PM in the Chapel Ridge Funeral Home in Markham.
