We regret to advise of the death of Major Ronald Wayne Sharp, CD (Ret'd) of Calgary AB on 10 October 2025, after a lengthy battle with kidney disease.
Ron was born in Vancouver BC. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1958 at age 16, as a Sapper Apprentice. After completing his high school education, he began a long and successful career with the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Canadian Military Engineers. He started as a Field Engineer and then was Commissioned from the Ranks as a Military Engineer Officer.
As an officer, Ron was first with the Base Construction Engineering Section in Hallifax (1973-75) before moving to Yellowknife where he was responsible for Cadets. His last posting was to the Base construction engineering Section in Calgary (1981-83).
Ron retired from the Canadian Forces in 1983 and began a long second career with the City of Calgary. He continued his dedication to the military by joining the Reserve Force and rose to become the Commanding Officer of 33 Field Engineer Squadron (1994-97), that he had helped re-establish. Ron retired from the City of Calgary in 2009.
In retirement, Ron spent his time in his garden, reading, working with military historical groups, the Sapper’s Club in Calgary and the Canadian Military Engineer Association.
A Celebration of Life was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Calgary Branch 285 on 1 November 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Branch 285 Royal Canadian Legion or the Veterans Association Food Bank, organizations Ron felt strongly about. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home
