Almost 170 people, both civilian, military and retirees, working within Engineering branches around the National Capital Region took part in the Engineers’ Challenge Run on Friday 17th October 2014. Also known as the CME Fun Run, this annual event draws together Engineers from across the National Capital Region in a friendly competition to make new friends, renew old acquaintances, and demonstrate the camaraderie that makes the Engineer family unique.
Participants gathered at Confederation Park to run 6 km along the ottawa river or walk 3 km along the Rideau Canal. Those running the 6 km route did so individually or in teams of five. This year, the team event had an interesting twist that drew upon individuals’ strengths but required the cooperation of the team as a whole. Teams had to transport an item used by Engineers while deployed in the field. There were many interesting reactions as people were passed by someone pushing a wheelbarrow, carrying a sledgehammer, or hauling a jerry can full of water.
Eighteen teams competed for the coveted Red Runner trophy but in the end the Geomatics Support Squadron comprised of Capt David Rosser, Cpl Alex Beauvais, Capt Dave Hennessy Cpl Karmen Osborn, and Cpl Dave Perron won the team event in a time of 30m:10s.The individual race was won by BGen Sylvain Sirois in a time of 29m:18s and by Tonya Hughes in a time of 35m:26s.
A big thank you to the organizers and the many volunteers who made it all possible.
