In 2014 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of France during WW II, France undertook to honour the surviving Canadian veterans who contributed to this liberation. The intention was to award a number of veterans with the Legion of Honour. Based on the initial Nominations that were submitted in late 2013, 28 sappers have received this honour.

The Embassy of France has recently announced that the deadline for nominations has been extended and nominations will now be accepted up to 31 July 2015. The applicable correspondence on this activity is available on-line:

Final submissions must be received by the Veterans Affairs office by 10 July 2015.

Note: Please use the ‘fillable’ Nomination Form attached at the bottom of this page. While the Nomination Form indicates that it should be directed to Veterans Affairs Canada, it is recommended that a DRAFT of any Nomination be sent to the CMEA Co-ordinator. Please “SAVE AS” to include the nominee’s Last Name in file name.

BGen Des Deslauriers (Ret’d), our new Director of Engineer Veterans wishes to ensure that the Canadian Military Engineers who contributed to the Liberation of France receive recognition of their valiant efforts. We are, therefore, seeking new nominations of eligible Canadian Engineer veterans who participated in the liberation of France.

The criteria are that recipients must have participated in the Battle for France between 6 June and 31 Aug 1944, be living and in adequate health to understand and receive the award. Location in Canada is not a problem as France will make the presentation to individuals through their representatives across the country. Nominations can be by a family member, a colleague or friend, an Association, or anyone else who considers that this individual is deserving.

The Canadian Military Engineers Association will be co-ordinating these nominations as we did for the earlier iteration conducted in Nov-Dec 2013. If you intend to make a nomination, you should advise our co-ordinator, LCol Ken Holmes, RCE (Ret'd) at: as soon as possible. Ken is available to assist in the drafting of the required narrative.

Our deadline for the receipt of a completed nomination is 1 July 2015 in order to complete the staffing to VAC before their deadline.

All CME units and CME Family Members are requested to give this notice the widest possible distribution to serving and retired CME personnel and veterans. In particular, units should ensure that veterans who form part of their local extended CME Family are made aware of this information.
