We regret to advise of the death of Major Peter Alexander Hertzberg (Ret’d) BASe, BAscMil, P.Eng on 6 July 2018 in Toronto, ON in his 97th year. Peter was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War and was the son of the late Major-General Charles Sumner Lund Hertzberg, CB, MC, ED., First Canadian Army Chief Engineer during WW II.
As a teenager, Peter was awarded the Royal Canadian Humane Association and Carnegie Hero Fund Medals for Bravery in his attempt to save a person from drowning at Peggy's Cove, NS in 1936. Educated at Upper Canada College, Harbord Collegiate, University of Toronto Schools, The Royal Military College of Canada and The University of Toronto. He served on active service with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division in the United Kingdom, Italy and North West Europe from 1941 to 1945.
After the war, Peter practised Consulting Engineering with the engineering firm of Proctor & Redfern and retired in 1985 as President and General Manager. He was awarded the Professional Engineers' Citizen's Award in the category of Arts. Peter was an active volunteer with numerous organisations including the Canadian Junior International Equestrian Foundation, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Roy Thomson and Massey Hall. Peter was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fort York Branch 165 and the Royal Canadian Military Institute.
At Peter's request, there will be no funeral service. A donation to The Sunnybrook Foundation or The Poppy Fund of The Royal Canadian Legion Fort York Branch 165 would be appreciated.
