F/Lt George Richard Walsh (Ret’d)
-
We regret to advise of the death of Flight Lieutenant George Richard Walsh (Ret’d), peacefully on 6 September 2014 in Calgary AB at the age of 74 years after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
George was born in Peterborough ON. He began a very long and successful working life with a paper route at age 15. George graduated from Western Canada High School in Calgary in 1957, after which he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force with the Regular Officer Training Plan. He attended the University of Alberta where he received his BSc in Civil Engineering in 1962 and then served as a Construction Engineering officer with the RCAF.
George retired from the Canadian Forces after a short career and then received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University in 1968. He became highly successful within the oil and gas industry, working with Shell Canada (1968-1981) and Alberta Natural Gas Company Ltd. (1981-1989) before running his own consulting business.
George had many passions in his life, but none matched his love of golf. He was an active member of Silver Springs Golf Club from 1986-2012, where he would play up to 75 games a year. George had a sense of adventure whether it was travelling with his wife, playing golf or curling at the Calgary Curling Club.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be held for close friends and family on 16 September at 10:00 a.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel (3220 4 Street N.W., Calgary) with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please feel free to send a donation to the University of Alberta. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
