We regret to advise of the death of Corporal John William “Jack” Demeter (Ret’d) of Edmonton, AB on 17 July 2019 at the age of 74.
Jack was born in New Waterford, NS. Seeking work after completing his schooling, he enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1966. He completed his basic training in Calgary with the Queens Own Rifles and then went to the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, BC for his Group 1 Field Engineer training. After completing this training in 1967, Jack was posted to 2 Field Squadron in Camp Gagetown, NB. Seeking excitement, he volunteered for Parachutist Training and joined 1 Airborne Field Squadron in Edmonton, AB in 1968 after completing this training.
Jack spent the next few years traveling around the world and jumping. During this time he deployed several times on operations such as the FLQ crisis in Montreal, QC (1970), Jamaica Humanitarian relief efforts (1972), and UN Peacekeeping operations in Cyprus (1973/74). When the Canadian Airborne Regiment relocated to Petawawa, ON in 1977 he decided to remain in the Edmonton area and retired from the Canadian Forces.
Jack became a renowned car salesman around Edmonton in his second career. He was a top trainer for Ford Canada and was awarded many times over his 30 year career. Jack was involved with his community and was inducted in the baseball hall of fame in his home town. He was very active with the Royal Canadian Legion Kingsway Branch as a member of the Colour Party and the Honour Guard. Jack was also an active member of the Edmonton Sappers Club.
