Ray was born in Pambrun SK, a small town near Swift Current, SK.  In 1924 his family moved to Windsor, ON where his father went to work in Detroit, USA until the Depression at which time the family moved onto a farm in Bothwell, ON and took up farming.  It was here that the family met Mormon missionaries who were to influence the rest of Ray’s future.

Ray was a Second World War veteran. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers and was initially sent to Owen Sound ON, and attached to a Chemical Warfare Mortar Company, RCE. When the army disbanded its chemical units in 1944, Ray was transferred to the 3rd Field Company, RCE in Italy, followed by service in Belgium and Holland.  On demobilization, Ray moved to Calgary where his family had settled.  It was here that Ray joined the Mormon church and spent the remainder of his life doing Missionary work.
