Captain Steven Smith, CD, retired from the Canadian Armed Forces on 09 January 2025, after 27+ years of loyal and dedicated service to the CAF, and the Royal Canadian Engineer Branch.

Steve first joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1983 and served a year and a half as an infantry rifleman with A Coy, Canadian Scottish Regiment in Victoria British Columbia. He spent four summers as the Waterfront Director/PERI (Physical Education and Recreation Instructor) at the Petawawa Cadet Training Center while attending Acadia University (1987-1992). After realising a B.Sc. alone was limiting, he attended the College of Geomatic Sciences for graduate Diplomas in Remote Sensing (1994) and GIS/RS Integration (1995).

In 2000, Steve re-enlisted as a Primary Reserve Combat Engineer Officer with 3 Field Engineer Squadron (now 33 Combat Engineer Regiment) in ttawa. He was substantively promoted to Lieutenant in 2003 and Captain in 2006. With 33 CER, his positions included Recce Officer, Troop Commander (reserve geomatics troop capability trials), Squadron 2IC and Squadron Officer in Charge (OC3, 5 and 8 SQN). He has provided geomatics support on Op Lentus, six weeks as part of OP Laser and was the LOCON ENGR officer as part of Ex Javelin Thrust with the 1st MEB at Camp Pendelton, California. Capt Smith also completed the NATO Interoperability course (2014) at MILENG COE Ingolstadt, Germany. At the interservices boxing match in Bermuda (1986), Steven was paired against a USMC opponent and won in second round by TKO.

Steve and Bridget Evoy married in 2000 and welcomed children Maren Elizabeth in 2002 and Carter Phillip in 2004 into the family. Captain Smith considers one of the highlights of his career swearing in his son into 33 CER (2022) and promoting him to Spr (2023). Steve now plans to finish off his civilian job with CCMEO (Canada Center for Mapping and Earth Observation) and against his spouse’s wishes, spend more time on his motorcycle.
