Capt Maynard Stanley Sutherland, BEM, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Maynard Stanley Sutherland BEM, CD (Ret'd), peacefully at home in Toronto on 21 February 2009.
Maynard was born in Halifax, NS. He joined the Non-Permanent Active Militia just prior to WWII and enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) on 1 September 1939 with the Royal Canadian Artillery. He later transferred to the Parachute Battalion but, after qualifying as a paratrooper, he sustained an injury that made him unfit for further service as a parachutist. He subsequently transferred to the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers and was employed at No.6 Engineer Services and Works Company at Halifax, NS. Maynard served with distinction during his military career and received many awards including the British Empire Medal while at the rank of Staff Sergeant (Acting Warrant Officer Class II, Quartermaster-Sergeant). He retired from the Army in 1965 with the rank of Captain after serving twenty-seven years.
Following his retirement from the Army, Maynard spent the next twenty years employed as Director in the Works Department, City of Scarborough, ON retiring in 1985. He served as President, Ontario Chapter, American Public Works Association and as Director of Transportation, Scarborough Red Cross. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 3914 Bloor St. West, Toronto on 27 February 2009 with inurnment at Meadowvale Cemetery.
