In 1997 he escaped Winnipeg for a one year stint as the Fire Chief in Goose Bay, and then with no opening for Fire Chiefs it was off to the Golan Heights for a one year tour with UNDOF Headquarters as a CE officer.

Upon completion of the UN tour in July 1999, Capt McNeil was posted to NDHQ Headquarters and has moved throughout the building, CFFM office, CLS Fire Marshal and CMS Fire Marshal.

Capt McNeil will be retiring in Ottawa with Dianne where they plan on enjoying some travel and the summers on the lake.
