Capt Barry Young, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Barry Young, CD (Ret’d), a resident of the Timberstone Mews senior's retirement community in Red Deer AB on 26 February 2023 at age 87.
Barry was born in Cape Breton NS and demonstrated a love for all sports at a very young age – particularly hockey. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954 in Sydney, NS and had a 26-year military career as a Firefighter. Barry spent 11 of those years in France and Germany where he played hockey as a defenseman for the RCAF.
Among the highlights of his military career, Barry was the Fire Chief for Canadian Forces Base Kingston ON for three years. His last posting was to CFB Cold Lake AB where he retired in 1979 as a Warrant Officer after a 26-year career.
After retiring from an active military career, Barry joined the Reserves. He attained his Glider License and became an instructor. Barry was to eventually also receive his commercial and private power license and count over 6000 glider flights. Barry was the Commanding Officer of the Prince Albert Air Cadet Squadron and the Prince Albert Gliding Zone for 12 years and he shared his love of flying with young people through the RCAF Cadet Program. He spent his summers at Penhold Air Cadet Training Camp supporting young cadets to attain further flying skills. During his 46-year career, Barry achieved his highest rank of Acting Major. He was a member of the Petrolia Legion Branch Number 216.
