    We regret to advise of the death of George Donald “Don” Morison Kettyls, B.Sc., MD., FRCP in Vancouver, BC on 21 March 2011.

    Don was born in Edmonton, AB.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  Upon demobilization, he entered the University of Alberta to study Medicine.  Following graduation, he spent two years as a general practitioner of medicine in British Columbia.  His interest in infectious diseases was advanced when he accepted a position to establish and direct a diagnostic laboratory for the provincial government to isolate and identify viruses causing disease and to implement preventative methods to control of such diseases. In his distinguished career in public health, Don left a significant legacy by helping to establish a number of community health facilities throughout the province of BC, including the Williams Lake Health Centre.  

    Don was also an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia teaching medical students, residents, laboratory scientists and nurses. As the principal author or contributor, Don was involved in the publication of several scientific papers, which are still referenced in textbooks used in medical schools today.

    A memorial service will be held 30 April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at First Memorial, Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver, BC.  Donations may be made to Meals on Wheels North Shore.  {gdNov2016kh}
