    We regret to advise of the death of Alexander “Alex” Balazsi peacefully at the Medicine Hat, AB Regional Hospital on 13 January 2015 in his 95th year.

    Alex emigrated with his family from Hungary to Rabbit Lake, SK in 1929.   As a teenager, he worked as a farm labourer.  He was a veteran of the Second World War joining the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1941, serving in Canada and Europe, landing in Normandy on D-Day.  After the war, Alex worked in the coal mines of Drumheller, AB and the hard rock mines of Uranium City, SK.  He later worked on hydroelectric projects in Australia and New Zealand on the Mana Puri Hydro Electric project.  Upon returning to Canada he was employed with ASL Paving as a 'cat skinner' on projects throughout central Saskatchewan. This was followed by work in a veteran's nursing home in Saskatoon, SK until his retirement.   

    A memorial service will be held at the Chinook Lodge in Medicine Hat on 17 January with Interment at a later date in Claresholm, AB.    {dcJan2017gd} [zsd, zsp]
