8 Wing Trenton hosted the 2012 Central Region Beaver Cup Hockey Tournament from the 1st of April to the 4th at the RCAF Flyers Arena. This hockey tournament has been a long standing tradition among Engineer Units across Canada dating back to the early 1970’s, and is usually comprised of 3 separate tournaments, Western Area, Central Region and Atlantic Area. The Beaver Cup fosters Esprit de Corp and comradeship within the Engineer Branch for both military and DND civilian engineers and gives the winning team bragging rights and the “coveted” Beaver Cup Trophy for a year.

This year’s tournament saw 10 teams participating including teams from 3 Wg Bagotville,, St Jean, 22 Wg North Bay, MCE Ottawa, St Thomas, CFB Petawawa, CFB Kingston, 16 Wg Borden and 3 teams Trenton. The event started this year with all the teams attending the events Meet & Greet and Barbeque hosted by WCE on the Sunday night at the WO’s and Sgt Mess. During the Meet and Greet teams were able to get together over a few socials and tell the younger Engineers about previous Beaver Cups.

The tournament was officially opened on Monday morning by Major Renald Nelson, the Wing Construction Engineering Officer, with a warm welcome to all his fellow Engineers and the official puck drop. During the opening ceremony the WCEO thanked all the Units for taking time out of their busy schedules to come and stressed the importance of such events to build Branch Esprit de Corp.

Tournament play saw lots of action with over 40 games being played over the 3 days, with each team seeing at least 6 games. The playoffs began on Wednesday morning with the semi-final matches. The “B” division final was won by CFB Petawawa defeating the “Trenton Blue” team. The “A” division final came down to a nail biting finish with the undefeated “Trenton Red” team, defeating St Jean in a close 5 to 4 finish!

All teams were well put together and Engineer pride and camaraderie was in abundance through the friendly tournament. During the closing ceremonies the WCEO presented the Trenton Red team with the Beaver Cup Trophy, marking 2 years in a row 8 Wg Trenton has won the Ontario Region Beaver Cup. Major Nelson issued a challenge to all Engineer Units to host next year’s traditional event.
