As the years go by, the world situation appears to be worsening, be it from natural disasters associated with climate change, conflicts in Ukraine, tensions in the China Sea, or hostilities in the Middle East. As Canadian Military Engineers, we are expected to be ready to respond when called upon just as we always have. On 29 April 2023, we will commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Canadian Military Engineers. Our anniversary is a good opportunity to reflect on the importance of the CME contributions to Canadian Armed Forces operations, whether supporting fellow Canadians during a domestic emergency or fellow CAF members and our Allies on missions abroad.

A prominent example from our past is the contribution of the Royal Canadian Engineers (RCE) during Operation HUSKY in Sicily in July 1943. The construction of our first Bailey bridge in the vicinity of Leonforte, under German fire, ensured the mobility of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division and our Allies while opening a new front against Hitler’s forces in Italy. Six members of the RCE, 3 rd Field Company, received the Medal of Bravery for their actions but sadly, 24 sappers were lost during operations in Sicily. This year is the 80th anniversary of Op HUSKY and we will commemorate our exploits by unveiling a monument in Leonforte on 26 July 2023. The monument consists of a Bailey panel with an interpretive board describing the actions and a plaque with the names of all 24 sappers. Technology has evolved immensely since then, but crossing a major river under enemy fire will remain a complex challenge, as witnessed in Ukraine.

Be proud of your accomplishments as well as those of our predecessors, such as the RCE achievements during OP HUSKY in 1943. Your support during Canadian Armed Forces operations is critical. Do your best to persevere through all challenges because, given the current state of the world, Canada needs you more than ever before. We are very proud of you. Happy 120th anniversary and best wishes.
