Sgt Alexander Semple - Military Medal - 18th Field Company

Military Medal

Lance-Sergeant Semple, 1 Platoon, 18th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, landed at H-Hour on 6 June on [the] beach west of Courseulles-sur-Mer, France. Although working conditions were entirely adverse and unexpected, he assembled his party and cleared a 50-yard gap through obstacles on the beach to permit landing craft to beach unhindered. Working in four feet of water hampering the troops, and in order to save time, Lance-Sergeant Semple led the men in moving obstacles without checking mines, shells and attached charges for traps, etc.

The gap was completed under enemy fire, and Lance-Sergeant Semple, although wounded, continued to lead his party until work was complete when he led them to shelter and assisted in taking enemy prisoners and in clearing wounded.
