Apprentice Training Squadron 1953- 1967
In 1953, the “Greenmonsters”, as they were to become affectionately known, invaded Camp Chilliwack at Vedder Crossing, B.C. as the vanguard of the Engineer Sapper Apprentice Program. In 1967, when the last of a total of 14 Intakes graduated, the program had trained a total of 847 fine young men. (Jim Harris, CFB Chilliwack Historical Society, History Page).
Any young man with an interest in becoming an apprentice had to be at least 16 years old, completed grade 8 and be physically fit. The two year training program was a combination of formal education and military training consisting of Field Engineer and Construction Trades. Leadership, drill and physical fitness were accented.
